China Tour

December 2011

The China Tour marks YOA Orchestra of the Americas' Asian debut. Presented by Armstrong Arts Limited, this project begins with a week-long Residence at the Chongqing Academy for the Arts. Under the leadership of Uruguayan conductor Jose Serebrier and YOA Faculty Leon Spierer (former Concertmaster, Berlin Philharmonic), Mauro Maur (Principal Trumpet, Rome Opera Orchestra), and Michael Webster (Professor of Clarinet, Shepard School of Music - Rice University), an 80-musician YOA orchestra will prepare in Chongqing two full programs to be performed in China's most prestigious theaters. Concerts will be held in cities that include Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Xi'An, Dalian, and Chongqing. Along the way, YOA musicians will have the opportunity to take part in cultural exchanges and visits to a number of China's important historic sites including the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors museum in Xi'An. Tour soloists include world-renknowned soprano Carole Farley and YOA musicians Nicolas Giordano (violin), Ivan Zerpa (violin), Sarah Steeves (cello), and Igancio Gallego (cello). A number of YOA partner institutions are supporting this project, among them the New England Conservatory, Guatemala Youth Orchestra, Escola de Musica Eleazar de Carvalho (Brazil), Núcleos Estaduais de Orquestas Juvenis e Infantis (Brazil), New Brunswick Youth Orchestra (Canada), and Consejo Nacional de la Cultura - Chile.

Chile Tour

July 2012

To commemorate Chile’s role in the origin of the social youth orchestra movement of the Americas and the legacy of Maestro Jorge Peña Hen, YOA Orchestra of the Americas will undertake a national concert tour of Chile in July 2012. The tour involves the collaboration of Fundación de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Chile (FOJI): Joining YOA musicians from across the Americas will be 15 young Chilean musicians of FOJI selected to represent each of the country’s regional youth orchestras. In addition to presenting concerts in Chile’s major concert halls including Teatro Las Condes, Teatro Municipal - Valparaiso, and Teatro del Lago - Frutillar, this combined YOA -FOJI orchestra will offer performances in cities throughout Chile, as well as local outreach at various points along the way.

The Chile Tour is framed by two residences. The opening residence, led by Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto and YOA Faculty, is hosted by Universidad de La Serena and the Intendente de Coquimbo with the support of the Ministerio de Turismo de Coquimbo, Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile (DIRAC), Dirección Regional de Coquimbo - Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes, and accommodation provided by Caja de Compensación Los Andes. The second residence is a concluding 5-day stay at Teatro del Lago in the southern lakeside resort of Frutillar. Between these two residences, YOA will tour from north to south across the country in cities including La Serena, Valparaíso, Santiago, Talca, Concepción, and Frutillar. Tour soloists include legendary violinist Sarah Chang, internationally acclaimed pianist Louis Lortie, the Gold-medalist of the 2011 OSM Standard Life Competition, and Guest Conductor, Benjamin Zander, Music Director of the Boston Philharmonic.
