YOA Musicians: YOA Alumni, featuring YOA Alumnus Nigel Armstrong, will return to the Gala stage and share their passion and music with you!

Nigel Armstrong, Violin

Nigel Armstrong is emerging as a dynamic and creative artist both within and beyond the realm of classical music.  As a soloist, Nigel has performed with orchestras around the world including the Dusseldorf Symphony, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, YOA Orchestra of the Americas, and the Boston Pops, and with conductors including Sir Neville Marriner and Carlos Miguel Prieto.

Ivan Javier Valbuena Páez was born in Bogotá and began his clarinet studies at the age of 8. He has been a clarinetist in YOA’s Orchestra since 2010 and he is a YOA Global Leader. As a Global Leader Ivan performs and teaches in Panamá, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize and Chicago.

A Dos Music Project, Clarinet

Luz Elena Sarmiento was born in Santander, Colombia and started her musical education when she was 9 years old. In 2010 and 2011 she was selected, as a clarinetist, to be a member of the YOA Orchestra. Luz is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Butler School of Music of the University of Texas at Austin, and she is appointed as the clarinet Teaching Assistant.

weet Saludos: Presenting a contagious mix of popular and traditional South American, Central American, and Cuban songs, DC-based quintet Sweet Saludos has built a large and loyal following. The ensemble features innovative vocal harmonies and guitar arrangements atop a foundation of powerful percussion. In addition to residencies and concert appearances, Sweet Saludos plays onstage at Rumba Cafe in Adam’s Morgan, DC’s Latin Quarter, on Saturday nights.
